"Built for Joy" is a keynote experience for students, educators, and leaders ready to find joy, passion, and purpose again. Across education, students, teachers, and leaders are working hard, leading diligently, and putting in lots of effort. And yet, many are exhausted, disconnected, and unsure if the way they’re working, leading, and learning is sustainable - and if it will ever be enjoyable. "Built for Joy" challenges one of the most normalized assumptions of our time: that success and impact have to come at the expense of our well-being. And it does not.
In this powerful and practical keynote experience, Dr. Sharla Horton introduces a new way forward - one that centers joy not as an option or afterthought, but as a critical driver of success. Grounded in research and real-world leadership experience from her 25-year career, "Built for Joy" explores the connection between burnout, disengagement, and the way we’ve been taught to work, learn, and lead, and offers a compelling reframe that positions joy, not as optional or reduced to "Fun Friday," but as central to our success and wellness.
We explore the concept of joy drivers and joy drainers, and learn how to align work, leadership, and daily practices in ways that honor who we are, what we value, and what fuels us. Why joy? Because when people experience joy, they don’t just feel better - they lead better, teach better, and even learn better. They, in turn, create joyful environments where others can do the same.
